getting up 2

Friday, April 2

I am leaving Senegal tomorrow. It is also my birthday. Yeay!

As a special birthday treat for myself I will spend the entire day on a bus out of town as sadly the train is not running this week, track problems apparently. So instead I'm going to bus it to Kayes (getting in at 4am) then hanging round for the daily train into Bamako from there. I met a guy from Ghana and a couple from France waiting for information about the train and will be travelling with them.

So what have I been up to in the meantime?

I spent a few days just chilling in Yoff, walking along the beach - that sort of thing. I did a drum workshop which was amazing. Sitting on the beach being absorbed into these sounds. I had forgotten how you almost go into a trance with the rhythm. I was thinking of buying a drum but they are just way too heavy and I still have a long way to go. I also spent a few days on Ile de Goree. Goree is a cool place and ex slave island. The streets were cobblestoned and trailed with bouganvilla while above the black kites hung in the air. I have been falling asleep to the sound of drums and waking to the cock crowing. It is really magical.
